Introduction

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Instructing Exercise to Music to Older Adults and People with Disabilities (QCF) is a specialist qualification that will help you prepare for a career in the sport and active leisure industry as a fitness instructor, teaching exercise to music to healthy adults and special populations.

Throughout this qualification you will develop your understanding of the principles of exercise, health and fitness; anatomy and physiology; and health, safety and welfare in the fitness environment. You will learn how to support client participants and develop the skills and knowledge needed to plan, instruct and evaluate exercise to music programmes.

You will develop an in-depth understanding of the physical, physiological and bio-mechanical changes that occur with ageing and disability and the impact these and psycho-social factors can have on the individual. The benefits of physical activity, barriers to physical activity and importance of healthy eating are also addressed. Your screening and communication skills will be enhanced and you will be able to design/adapt programmes to meet the needs of older adults and people with disabilities.

On successful completion of this qualification you will be equipped to work with older adults and people with disabilities for which medical referrals are not needed.

National Occupational Standards (NOS)

This qualification has been mapped to the relevant NOS, and is accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

This qualification is approved and supported by SkillsActive, the sector skills council for active leisure learning.

Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

This qualification is approved by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). On successful completion of this qualification you will be eligible for entry registration onto the REPs at Level 2 of which 20 points are required initially. However, this qualification carries an additional 20 points each for the two level 3 awards.

A brief summary of course schedule

Candidates wishing to qualify as an EXTEND Exercise to Music Teacher may enrol on courses that are organised at various venues throughout the UK. During the 14 day training course, candidates will attend a series of lectures and practical workshops. The course is assignment focussed, encouraging further self-study to improve individual techniques of class delivery, the early and accurate recognition of disabilities and problems, and how to adapt exercises to the individual needs of the participants.

The training sessions are held once a fortnight and are spread over 6 months, culminating in a theoretical and practical examinations. The Exercise to Music Course costs £850.00 per candidate. Applicants who already have a Level 2 or 3 Exercise to Music (ETM) qualification, might wish to be considered for the the Older Adult and Disability Awards only at a cost of £575.00. Payment can be made by instalments or through special arrangements as agreed by the Course Tutor.

The course fees will be required in full by the third week and/or session. If a candidates enrols for a course and then drops out by session 3 an administration charge of £50 will be made payable to EXTEND in all cases.
